Job Description

 DESCRIPTION OF ROLE

The Logistics Manager will be responsible for providing strategic and operational leadership for the Company’s logistics operations, including transport, fleet, workshop, heavy lifting, warehousing, open yard, and port operations. The role is accountable for ensuring safe, compliant, reliable and cost-effective service delivery, optimal utilization and availability of logistics assets and resources, achievement of operational and financial targets, and continuous improvement across the logistics function. The position also provides strategic advice to the General Manager on logistics capacity, fleet and equipment requirements, operational risks, investment priorities and cost optimization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1.      Strategic & Operational Leadership

  • Lead and oversee the Company's end-to-end logistics operations covering Transport, Port Operations, Workshop, Fleet, Heavy Lifting Equipment, Warehousing, and Open Yard operations, ensuring alignment with business objectives.

  • Develop and implement the Company's logistics strategy, operating policies, SOPs, resource plans, and service standards to drive operational efficiency, reliability, safety, and profitability.

  • Optimize the utilization of fleet, equipment, manpower, facilities, and other logistics resources, maintaining a minimum 90% active fleet availability and minimizing operational downtime.

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight to the Workshop Manager and logistics teams, ensuring effective coordination across all logistics functions and timely resolution of operational constraints.

  • Ensure effective fleet and equipment maintenance planning to support asset availability, reliability, safety, and cost efficiency.

  • Assess logistics capacity and resource requirements to ensure alignment with current and anticipated business needs.

    2.      Performance Management 

  • Establish and drive performance management across Transport, Workshop, Heavy Lifting, Warehousing, and Yard operations through clear KPIs, targets, reporting, and corrective action plans.

  • Monitor fleet and equipment availability, utilization, productivity, maintenance performance, downtime, and operating costs.

  • Oversee fuel management and asset controls to minimize wastage, unauthorized usage, downtime, and unnecessary operating costs.

  • Ensure effective asset maintenance, lifecycle management, replacement planning, and operational controls.

  • Lead the preparation, implementation, and monitoring of the departmental budget, ensuring effective expenditure control, optimal resource utilization, and cost-saving initiatives.

  • Drive achievement of approved departmental budget and GP margin targets.

  • Ensure timely and accurate logistics performance reporting to the General Manager. 

    3.      Risk and Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with all statutory, regulatory, customer, contractual, and Company requirements across transport, workshop, heavy lifting, warehousing & port operations.

  • Ensure all vehicles, lifting equipment, handling equipment, and operational assets are appropriately licensed, inspected, certified, maintained, and fit for purpose before deployment.

  • Lead the implementation of Health & Safety policies, transport security, cargo protection, emergency response, and risk management measures across the logistics function, in collaboration with the QHSE Department.

  • Promote and maintain a strong safety and compliance culture throughout the logistics function.

    4.      People, Customers & Stakeholder Management 

  • Provide leadership and accountability for logistics personnel, including the Workshop Manager, through effective workforce planning, performance management, coaching, development, and succession planning.

  • Set clear performance expectations and ensure accountability across direct reports and logistics teams.

  •  Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, suppliers, port authorities, regulatory bodies, contractors, and internal stakeholders to ensure reliable service delivery and effective resolution of operational issues.

  •  Lead the performance management of key logistics suppliers and contractors, including transport subcontractors, fuel providers, workshop service providers, equipment suppliers, and security service providers.

  • Ensure that agreed service levels, quality standards, cost requirements, and compliance expectations are consistently met by logistics suppliers and contractors.

  •    Drive a high-performance culture focused on accountability, customer service, safety, teamwork, operational discipline, and continuous improvement.

    5.      Continuous Improvement & Business Development

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives to enhance logistics productivity, service delivery, asset utilization, operational reliability, cost efficiency, and profitability.

  • Ensure continuous staff development through structured training, coaching, mentoring, and upskilling programmes across the logistics function.

  • Identify and implement opportunities for process optimization, digitalization, automation, technology adoption, and improved operational controls.

  • Provide strategic analysis and recommendations to the General Manager on logistics capacity, fleet and equipment requirements, operational risks, investment priorities, and cost optimization.

  • Lead assessments and recommendations relating to fleet and equipment acquisition, replacement, expansion, utilization, and disposal.

  • Lead strategic logistics projects and initiatives in support of the Company's business objectives and perform other assignments as directed by the General Manager.

    REQUIREMENTS

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's Degree in Logistics and Supply Chain Management / Transport Management/ Business Administration / Operations Management, or a related field.

    • Professional qualification in Logistics, Transport or Supply Chain Management is an added advantage.

    • Minimum 7 years’ relevant experience in logistics, fleet, transport & workshop management , warehousing or supply chain operations, with at least 3–5 years in a managerial/senior supervisory role.

    • Strong leadership, strategic planning, financial management, Heavy Lift Operations & analytical skills with sound knowledge of Kenya Ports Operations.

    • Experience in Heavy Lift and Cargo Handling Operations is an added advantage
